No matter how or when we celebrate Valentine’s Day, it will always be a day to celebrate love. El Día del Amor y la Amistad or “ Day of Love and Friendship”, is also celebrated on July 23rd, so in Bolivia they get double the love! They also celebrate Estudiantes, Amor y Juventud, or “ Students, Love, and Youth”. In Colombia it is celebrated on September 20th, and this day is filled with secret admirers giving gifts and professing their love.īolivians celebrate Día de Amor on September 21st, and is a day in which lovers exchange of cookies, candies, and flowers. Traditions of gift giving and festivities are similar to other countries, however they celebrate in September. In Colombia and Bolivia, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in September instead of February. The parade is full of people decked out in colorful clothing and masks! ![]() Many people celebrate El Día del Cariño by joining in a huge senior citizen’s parade in the country’s capital city. On this day, it is also encouraged to show love for friends and co-workers, too. In Guatemala it is also celebrated by giving gifts and sentimental goodies. Similar to our Secret Santa, Angelito is played by randomly picking names and getting your chosen friend a gift! Some people also refer to the game as Amigo Secreto, meaning “ secret friend.” How cute is that? In many countries, such as the Dominican Republic and El Salvador, children play a game called Angelito to celebrate the holiday. While people still give candies, flowers, and balloons, in Mexico it’s more about celebrating friendships. In Mexico, they celebrate El Día de San Valentin, but it’s more commonly referred to as El Día del Amor y la Amistad. Since Carnaval goes on at the same time, it is considered a public holiday, and many celebrate with mass weddings to be able to accommodate large groups of couples. In Peru, for instance, people give each other orchids! Not only are orchids native to many parts of Latin America, but they also symbolize deep love, making them a perfect way to celebrate the holiday. There are also some fun and unique traditions observed in many countries to commemorate this loving holiday. Corte Inglés is one of the most popular department stores in the country, so the name pokes fun at what some people in America call “ the Hallmark holiday.”
